Friendship Bridge

They began to enlist the help of their friends shortly after they returned. Soon, a few committed individuals with concern for the people of that war-ravaged country began carrying medical supplies and medicines to Vietnam, and as a result, Friendship Bridge began its grassroots medical relief project in 1989. The effort grew, and in the spring of 1990 Friendship Bridge sent the largest single shipment of medical relief to Vietnam from the United States since 1975. With a tiny budget and using only volunteers, this tireless, innovative group managed to send several more shipments, totaling over 140 tons. Since 1990 numerous healthcare professionals have participated in teaching projects in Vietnam. In the early 1990s, many Vietnamese healthcare professionals visited the US through Friendship Bridge and in partnership with other organizations. As a result of these efforts, a bridge of opportunity was forged - the opportunity to heal the wounds of a war that had haunted so many lives. It was also an opportunity to build relationships among people of vastly different cultures who shared the common goal of alleviating the suffering of impoverished people. It was clear to all involved that this bridge went both ways and helped to heal the suffering of others while lifting the spirits of those involved in the effort.
