Furnished Quarters was founded in 1998 by brothers Gary and Steven Brown. The Browns had been investing in and developing real estate since the early 1980's. Noticing the growing demand for corporate housing and furnished apartments in Manhattan, Gary and Steve decided to convert two of their brownstone buildings into furnished rental apartments. The response to these furnished apartments was overwhelming.Capitalizing on the Brown family's 85 year history in home furnishings, Furnished Quarters created a design approach distinctive to the corporate housing industry. "Most corporate housing firms have standardized looks and packages throughout their inventory. "We wanted our interiors to reflect the buildings and city in which they are located", said Steven, company President. "Our apartment interiors, while functional, are definitely urban and very New York. The Furnished Quarters' in-house design team is involved in everything from the selection of our house wares to the choice of down comforters. People recognize the design difference. Living in our apartments, our guests get to live like New Yorkers, something that they can't experience with a typical hotel stay. It's why we use the qualifier, 'Stay different' to describe a Furnished Quarters' experience."To meet the demand for furnished apartments, the Browns furnished 50 more of their apartments within six months. Understanding the market's need for a variety of neighborhoods and other building types, Gary and Steve reached out to their network of real estate developers in order to supplement their inventory. Within the first year of operations, Furnished Quarters had over 150 apartments.
