Garrison Auction & Realty Association has been accumulating auction business experience in the Hudson Valley since the great depression. This is how we got here: Charles D."Charlie"Garrison completed a course offered by Reppert School of Auctioneering in Decatur, Indiana, in 1945. Upon finishing the course, he returned home and began his career a s a professional auctioneer, and, in 1965, obtained his real estate broker's license. In 1949, the late A.J. DiBenio, an established auctioneer and real estate broker from Maybrook, NY, approached Mr. Garrison with a partnership proposal. That began A.J. DiBenio & Charles D. Garrison Auctioneers. The partnership was very successful and continued until Mr. DiBenio's death in 1973. The business during the 30's, 40's and 50's centered on agriculture, the backbone of the economy in Orange, Ulster and Sullivan counties at the time. Orange County was ranked second in the US in dairy cattle population and there was a huge need for the marketing abilities made available by A. J. DiBenio & Charles D. Garrison. The skills of a professional auctioneer were in high demand with farmers entering and exiting the business of farming. In addition, the marketing of some farm products required the skills of a professional auctioneer. The 60's began the demise of the dairy industry in the Hudson Valley, due to the development of better refrigeration and bulk milk transportation over improved roadways...
