An independent, not-for-profit organization, the Joint Commission is the predominant standards-setting and accrediting body in health care. Since 1975, the Joint Commission has developed state-of-the-art standards for outpatient ambulatory care organizations. More than 1,200 freestanding ambulatory care organizations maintain Joint Commission accreditation. Facts About Joint Commission Accreditation The mission of the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations is to continuously improve the safety and quality of care provided to the public through the provision of health care accreditation and related services that support performance improvement in health care organizations. Joint Commission standards of quality are developed in collaboration with health professionals and others. The Joint Commission stimulates health care organizations to meet these state-of-the-art standards through accreditation and the teaching of quality improvement concepts. 1. The Joint Commission is an independent, not-for-profit organization. 2. An organization voluntarily undergoes a survey by a full team of Joint Commission experts every three years. 3. The Joint Commission evaluates and accredits almost 11,000 hospitals and home care agencies, and more than 7,000 other health care organizations. 4. The Joint Commission is governed by a 28-member Board of Commissioners, which includes six public members. Board members have diverse experience in health care, business and public policy, and provide policy leadership and oversight to the Joint Commission. 5. The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Hospitals was founded in 1951. The name was changed to the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations in 1987 to reflect the increasing diversity of organizations being accredited. 6. More than 400 physicians, nurses, health care administrators and other experienced professionals are employed by the Joint Commission to perform accreditation surveys.
