He began writing fiction after an eighteen-year career as a Roman Catholic priest, during which he served as a parish priest and retreat director. His life in the ministry is credited with providing a novelist's insight into human nature, with all its heroism and cowardice, its passion for love and life and its shadowy side of withholding affection, obsession with power, and desire for control. In addition to his writing career, he is a partner in a small computer-oriented book and software publishing company (Bridge Learning Systems, Incorporated) Drawing on his earlier training in the ministry, he also serves as a part-time Pastoral Associate at his local parish church, Christ the King, in Pleasant Hill, CA.
