Geo-Con is a full service environmental contractor providing site remediation services for all types of environmental remediation. Since the early 1980's, Geo-Con has been a major provider of soil and groundwater remediation services. Having performed successfully on over 30 Superfund sites and numerous RCRA facilities, we possess the knowledge and experience to manage full-scale hazardous waste cleanups. Since multiple construction techniques are necessary to complete most remediation projects, clients often look to Geo-Con for our demonstrated abilities to perform with minimal subcontracting.
An additional challenge is the strata through which excavation occurs. Generally, the top 15 feet of the soil profile consists of the coal ash which is highly liquefiable. This requires care in both the excavation and stability of work platform. The remainder of the profile consists of sand and silt underlain with the shale bedrock key-in layer. Because of the displacement during the ash slide, occasional non-native type materials have also been encountered.
From our roots in 1979, Geo-Con has evolved from being just a specialty geotechnical contractor into one of the leading environmental construction contractors. That expansion of services was made possible by the transfer of our geotechnical capabilities into new applications. However, we have continued to innovate and successfully sustain our roots in the civil geotechnical industry.
Geo-Con's scope essentially consisted of installation of 175 jet grout columns positioned within a sixty-foot diameter circle. The columns were 4 to 4.5 feet in diameter and laid out in a brick pattern to provide enough overlap to provide 90 to 100 percent coverage of the designated area to be treated. Each jet grout column was grouted from a depth of 100 feet up to 25 feet below the ground surface to treat the entire impacted zone. Due to the obstructions, some holes had to be pre-drilled so that the jet grout rods could be efficiently advanced to the required depth.
Both SSM and DSM provide cost-effective solutions to civil engineering projects as foundation systems. SSM columns can be arranged into gravity retaining walls or mat foundations for ground improvement. DSM walls can be steel reinforced to provide structural retaining walls similar to diaphragm walls or sheet piling. In-situ soil mixing minimizes soil movement and maximizes structural integrity.
