Alene Chrismon Harkey peacefully passed away at Clapps Nursing Center on Monday, July 21, 2014, after a period of declining health. Mrs. Harkey was a native of Guilford County, born September 20, 1925 to the late Butler and Daisy Chrismon. In addition to her parents, Alene was preceded in death by her loving husband of 57 years, Ray Harkey, Sr. Alene and Ray met when he returned to the United States on furlough during World War II, and they were married three weeks later. She was also predeceased by her beloved son, Ray Harkey, Jr., sister, Novella Somers, and two brothers, Fred Chrismon and Tom Chrismon. Alene graduated in 1942 from Summerfield High School. She was employed for seven years by Lorillard Tobacco Company and retired after 25 years from Wrangler/Blue Bell. As a young adult, Alene was baptized and became a faithful member of Southside Baptist Church. She loved her church family and was an active member at Southside where she served and worshipped for over 55 years. Alene was a true Southern lady who loved cooking, gardening, and spending time with her family and friends.
