This years walk will begin on the campus of UMKC. October 12, 2010 “Never ate a Hamburger until my Transplant” When Libby Stone takes the podium in Kansas City on Oct. 12th, she will explain how she lived twenty years without hamburgers, tacos, spaghetti or birthday cake until her liver transplant three years ago. Libby is one of the speakers scheduled for the eighth annual Life Savers Rally for 250 selected student leaders hosted by Gift of Life, a local nonprofit that builds awareness of the critical need for organ and tissue donation. Blinded by diabetes and kidney failure, Lisa Arthur Zimmerer faced different obstacles. She will recount her increased loss of eyesight and her decision to pick out a wedding dress before her world went black. Now Lisa considers each day a gift following a life-saving pancreas and kidney transplant. She also wore the dress last summer and is a happy newlywed. Other speakers this year will include Dr. Richard Gilroy, Director of the Liver Transplant Program at the University of Kansas Medical Center and Bob Brown, the father of Chris Brown who was killed by a drunk driver in Kansas City, Kansas. As a donor father, Bob Brown will share the moment his son, Chris, said he wanted to be an organ donor, how they coped with their loss and the joy of meeting the recipients of Chris’ heart and pancreas. In a true selfless act, Madison Place Elementary School principal Gary Stevenson in Olathe learned that the husband of a co-worker needed a kidney. So last year he successfully donated a kidney to Kerrin Burke, the husband of Kris Burke. Both Gary and Kerrin will share their viewpoint and experiences with the students at the Life Savers Rally. Miraculous true stories, learning about organ and tissue donation, choosing to share your decision with loved ones and taking the necessary steps to become a Life Savers will take center stage at the Life Savers Rally, 10 am – noon, Oct. 12, the Truman Forum at the Plaza Library.
