Before the turn of the century, Dr. S.J. Summers, a family physician of the Cameron Community, brought from Mississippi the first pecan seedlings to be set out in South Carolina on a commercial scale. From that modest beginning, his son, David K. Summers, Sr., planted pecan orchards on the Summers Plantation and elsewhere in South Carolina. He also built the first shelling plant in the Carolinas -- Golden Kernel Pecan Co., Inc. Today, Golden Kernel Pecan is carried on by David's two sons, David and Bill, and has expanded to include other distinctive foods of the Carolinas.
