Description

In 1976, Mrs. Yardumian founded Greater Pittsburgh Literacy Council with a group of volunteers from the Pittsburgh area. Since she continued to respond to requests for training from all over the state, GPLC did not grow very rapidly. By 1981, the demand for tutoring was too great for Mrs. Yardumian and her volunteers to handle. A long-range planning committee recommend that the Council become a non-profit corporation and that it constitute a Board of Directors. GPLC was incorporated in 1982. Since that time, GPLC has served more than 20,000 students. GPLC has been a national, regional, and local leader in adult education and family literacy as demonstrated by being picked to be the local affiliate of the National Center for Family Literacy, Literacy*AmeriCorps, Southwest Professional Development Center, in addition to many other projects.
