Welcome to Cell Cycle, the future of custom jewelry design led by product design company Nervous Systems. Nervous System was founded in 2007 by Jessica Rosenkrantz and Jesse Louis-Rosenberg. They are renowned for their one-of-a-kind organic looking accessories that include rings, bracelets, necklaces and earrings. Cell Cycle is a line of 3D printed nylon and stainless steel jewelry. The cell-like structure and rigid forms inherent of their designs include a lot of space and minimal use of material. A process of “computational design” was developed by Nervous Systems wherein they wrote their own program that encodes a system for creating 3D form. The simulation of a cellular mesh in 2D space was uniquely altered through subdivision of random cells to generate ‘organic’ and original patterns. To transform the 2D cellular mesh into 3D, the 2D mesh patterns were conceptually wrapped onto two cylinders in 3D space. Once made in 3D, the pieces are sent to a 3D printer that utilizes a process called Selective Laser Sintering (SLS). This process lays down thin coats of a powdered nylon (polyamide) and fuses the material together with a laser. This state-of-the-art technology successfully translates digital files into physical objects. Nervous System shares their innovative software with other companies rather than designing new pieces themselves. What makes Nervous Systems pioneers in custom designed jewelry is that they allow the consumer to design and purchase their own work created on Cell Cycle software right on the Nervous System website. They are also developing an iPad version so you can design Cell Cycle pieces on the go!
