By the time Carl Grant was elected President of the Memphis Area Home builders Association in 1959, his two sons were already out in the subdivisions, learning the building profession from the ground up. Doing every chore imaginable, they learned the trade before they learned the business. By the time they formed the Richard and Milton Grant Company in 1970, with scores of houses already under their belts, the Grant family tradition had been firmly established upon a very simple principle. "Do what you say you'll do," is how Milton Grant sums it up. "Do that and you'll be successful."The third generation of Grant homebuilders graduated from the same school as their fathers. Milton's sons Carey and Kevin were framing houses as soon as they could swing a hammer. Keith and David, Richard's sons, began laying sod and cleaning building sites when they were about twelve so they could save enough to buy their first cars when they turned sixteen.Most people agree that there is a special feeling about a Grant home. Its secret lies in the unique features the Grants have learned to incorporate over the years by responding to customers' requests. Gas fireplaces, whirlpool tubs and separate vanities are among these distinctive touches. Arched openings, columns and high ceilings have become a Grant family signature.
