October’s Staff Spotlight is Mr. Shane Rivette. Mr. Rivette has been a teacher at Grant for 9 years in the Science department. Currrently he teaches AP Biology, Honors Biology, and Environmental Science. Born in Joplin, Missouri, Mr. Rivette grew up in Lawton, Oklahoma where he attended Lawton High School. After high school Mr. Rivette travelled to Illinois and studied at Northern Illinois University where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences with minors in Chemistry and Spanish. Clearly an avid learner, Mr. Rivette continued his education with a Masters degree in Curriculum and Instruction and is currently pursuing a second Masters degree in Biological Sciences. As an instructor at Grant he has helped his students understand and become passionate about Science. In addition to his work in the classroom, Mr. Rivette is the Head Boys Varsity Soccer coach and the Head Girls JV Soccer coach. To create a successful soccer program at GCHS is one goal he is working toward as he continues to develop the talented members of his teams. Mr. Rivette has been awarded the Grant Superintendent “Super G” as testament to his hard work and dedication in the classroom and on the field. A current resident of Volo, IL, Mr. Rivette enjoys spending time with his fiancé and his dog Josie, who rumor has it, can do all the cool tricks, even catching Frisbees. His hobbies include traveling and experiencing new cultures. Mr. Rivette is a fan of the outdoors and can often be found running marathons and participating in triathlons. His love of the outdoors and traveling will come in handy as he travels to Costa Rica this summer to get married! Congratulations to Mr. Rivette! SEPTEMBER STAFF SPOTLIGHT: BLAIR SCHOELL, SOCIAL STUDIES TEACHER This year’s first Staff Spotlight is our current Educator of the Year, Blair Schoell. A History teacher, Mr. Schoell has been a Grant Bulldog since he student taught with Mr. Geist in 2006. This year Mr. Schoell is teaching U.S. History, Honors U.S. History, Government, and Honors Government. Mr. Schoell grew up in Arlington Heights and graduated from Prospect High School in 2002. He spent his college years at the University of Iowa and is an avid Hawkeyes fan. In addition to his love for the Hawkeyes, Mr. Schoell is a Bulldog fan as well and spends many hours coaching the track team and the freshmen football team. Throughout his time at Grant, Mr. Schoell has proven that he is dedicated to his students and has high expectations for their time in his classroom. “My goal is to provide the best possible learning experience and environment that my students might ever have in their academic lives. I want their experiences in my class to provide them with the necessary skills to not only be successful in life, but to perhaps inspire them to pursue a career, or further study, in the political arena,” says Mr. Schoell. When Mr. Schoell finds free time away from Grant he enjoys participating in World War Two living history events, volunteering with the Boys and Girls Club of Lake County, collecting historical artifacts, and of course, following his beloved Hawkeyes!
