Granville Golf Course

Description

The Granville Golf course was designed in 1924 by the world famous Scottish golf course architect, Donald Ross, and opened in 1925. Ross designed the course in Granville for John S. Jones and his Granville Inn. This course has long been noted as one of the best public courses in the mid-west. Ross designed over 400 courses delegating much of the work to his associates and many times never seeing the finished product. In 1925, Ross' Golf Course and the Granville Inn were finished, and Jones' hosted his many business and social friends, including the golfing greatest of the time. Walter Hagen, Horton Smith and Gene Sarazen all gave their highest marks to Ross' newest course. Donald Ross never hesitated to borrow from the features at any of the seaside links in his homeland of Scotland. Granville, with it's 63 artfully placed sand bunkers, its elevated and undulating greens, is no exception. Granville's rolling, wooded terrain, also provided generous opportunity for Ross to articulate what was perhaps his greatest concept in design: Never contrive a hazard if you can take advantage of one that nature has provided. In every way, it's clear the courses' future is bright, under new ownership since 1986. The golf course has wall to wall irrigation, a bunker renovation program and tree replacement program are just a few of the ongoing upgrades to the golf course.
