Groves Academy was founded in 1972 specifically for students who because of their learning disabilities had not been successful in a traditional school setting. Since its founding, Groves has been the only independent school of its kind in Minnesota. In 1982 the school moved about five miles east to its present location. The move allowed the school to grow from 53 students to its present enrollment of 175 students. Throughout its history the 8:1 student to teacher ratio has been key to the success of its program. This allows students to receive small group and individualized instruction throughout the day. Classes emphasize individual achievement in a noncompetitive atmosphere. Students learn to recognize their strengths and weaknesses and realize that having difficulty in a particular area does not mean they cannot learn. Rather they are taught to be persistent in their learning and to develop strategies to remediate and circumvent their difficulties. Groves Academy, located in a first-ring suburb of Minneapolis, serves students from Minneapolis, St. Paul, and the surrounding suburbs. Psychologists, pediatricians, and educational specialists refer families to the school. The mission statement has been consistent since the school's founding and was expanded in 2003 to reflect new initiatives in community outreach.
