Description
Guided Therapy Systems, Incorporated initially was founded in 1994 as a research and development (R&D) company. It was founded by: Michael H. Slayton, Ph.D, and co-founded by Peter Barthe, Ph.D. In 2004, Guided Therapy Systems, LLC was created and the accelerator model was implemented. During the succeeding years, GTS worked on a number of projects that included collaboration with government and corporate sponsors. From 2000 to 2003, GTS developed minimally invasive surgical oncology devices for Ethicon Endo-Surgery, a Johnson and Johnson Company (JNJ). These unique, see/treat devices initially were designed to treat solid tumors of the liver, arising from hepatocellular cancer and other primary cancers that metastasized to the liver. In 2003, it was apparent that the biggest opportunity for this liver cancer product was in Asia and it was not easily accessible to Ethicon’s sales and marketing capability. Ethicon decided to not commercialize the products. “We substantially changed our direction immediately following that experience with JNJ,” says Brian O’Connor, former director of worldwide business development at Ethicon Endo-Surgery, Incorporated, a Johnson and Johnson Company, and now co-founder, president and chief operating officer at GTS. GTS is principally a research and development company, and therefore does not have dedicated sales forces, established customer channels, or geographic constraints that limit our choices.” Adds O’Connor, “As a first priority, we carefully position our technology against big clinical unmet needs in large and growing markets. We then apply appropriate risk mitigation practices before transitioning them into a subsequent product development and commercialization phase. This technology management process also allows us to operate in a capital efficient method, which is attractive to our investors and corporate partners. We seek the most promising opportunities in dynamic markets that enable optimal commercial scale-up, which will be most attractive to institutional investors, public markets and/or strategic buyers.” Key GTS strategies: • Incubation of proprietary products, followed by the creation and spin-off of a single-purpose entity as a related portfolio company • Product development services for partners and third-party companies • Out-licensing of intellectual properties “We diligently apply the greatest fidelity in our engineering, scientific and clinical testing activities,” says Peter Barthe, GTS vice president of research and development. “The company now has established a reputation of having developed and generated evidence-based data to prove the effectiveness of its products.” (See Publications.) Patented GTS see/treat devices now are being sold to physicians and surgeons throughout the world, including Europe, Asia and the United States. The company also has developed, and is preparing to commercialize, devices for use by consumers at home. Among others, the unmet needs being targeted by GTS include solid tumor ablation for oncology treatment, women’s health products for the outpatient environment, musculoskeletal conditions including sports medicine treatments, aesthetic medicine, home healthcare and others.
