Gulf States Credit Union was chartered as a Federal Credit Union in 1960, with Florida Gas Company as its primary sponsor. In 1985, after several mergers, Florida Gas became a part of Enron Corp. Since Enron also had a credit union, a decision was made not to merge the two credit unions, and Gulf States embarked on its own to expand its field of membership.
