The quality, style of engraving and time to complete the work is the difference. Also is the amount charged for the work. If an engraver refers to your project as a job, his price will be less than if he is looking for a "commission". Sounds silly, but the proud ones want only the high priced work and fancy words are a tip off. Also, be aware of engravers that do not have a web site or pictures of their work on the web. At least a brochure should be offered. Time to complete is another problem that can be frustrating. Some engravers are booked up and feel secure with 6 months work in the gun safe. The time problem is frustrating for everyone. The gun business is loosing skilled craftsmen. Look for an engraver, stock maker or gunsmith that is good and they are always busy. The terms, "Master" and "Professional" Engravers are used but never defined well. The Engravers Guild points out that "Master" is only used in Europe. Yet now they use it themselves. And their FEGA "Masters" send me work to be lettered and refinished. Professional, is accepted as an American term. Are you a "Professional" or "Master" if you can not do lettering at all! Can not refinish a gun or do not know anything about gunsmithing. Very few engravers can. FEGA "Masters" is a term they use and it is a joke. That is why I will never belong to their stupid guild. Write them and ask if they can engrave lettering as good as Dale Woody. Their "Masters" send me work. Work they can not do! The man that trained me to engrave was a true professional. Rudy Marek could engrave, letter, refinish, repair and make a gun from a chunk of steel and wood. Little did I know when I met him in 1983 that he was an American "Master Gunsmith" and more. He was just like the men 200 years ago that could make a gun. Craftsmen like these are rare today as we are a world of specialists. Those who call themselves "master" or "professional" today usually don't meet the same standard as 200 years ago. Firearms guild [FEGA] "Masters" are only embarrassing themselves by using the term. Many are excellent engravers, but "Masters", NOT!! www.fega.com Rudy Marek Engraver & Gunsmith Rudy Marek engraved guns for almost 50 years before he passed away in 1999. He restored old guns and could fool the "experts" at times with his restorations. Rudy signed few guns and those that are signed are worth good money as his quality of engraving is excellent. A gunsmith/engraver that is missed by all who knew him. He is remembered. Shiloh Sharps & Engraving Shiloh Sharps makes guns, and good ones to. But they refuse to allow their customers to have an "Outside" engraver engrave their guns. They have their engraver and charge plenty to profit from her work. They refuse to work with any other engraver to force their customers into getting engraving they would rather I do for them. It is sad they make such a good gun but will not allow people to choose an engraver freely. I have some choice 4 letter words for them I will keep to myself.....
