Description

The Davis family heralds from Plaquemine, Louisiana and has experienced generations of entrepreneurs. In the early 1900's, Hall Davis II, better known as "the Ice Man" owned and operated a horse driven entity called the "Crystal Ice Company". He also owned a car and provided an ambulance/taxi cab service for persons in need of being transported to medical facilities and to purchase groceries. His wife, Grandma Ella Davis assisted him in the business and continued it after his demise. After a stint in the U. S. Army, Hall Davis III attended Southern University. He later attended and graduated from Worsham College of Mortuary Science in Chicago. Upon graduation from mortuary school he went to work at Gilbert's Funeral Home in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. In 1953, Hall III partnered with Mr. Ernest Harris and Mr. W.W. Harleaux to establish a funeral home in Port Allen, Louisiana. One year later the partnership dissolved when he bought the two gentlemen out. In 1954, Hall III and his wife Elsie Harrington Davis, a nurse, established Hall's Port Allen Mortuary with a sustaining ambulance-hearse business. Mrs. Davis was the dispatcher, while Mr. Davis did all the public relations and embalming. Mr. Davis III constructed and later remodeled the building where the business now stands.
