Hana Designs: Handmade cards by Janet Hirata I'm a graphic designer, art instructor, and fine artist living in Southern California. I’ve been making handmade cards as Christmas gifts for friends and family for years. After much encouragement to start selling the cards, I created Hana Designs in 2005. Since many of the cards are based upon original paintings of flowers, the name “Hana” — meaning “flower” in Japanese — is a good fit. I am inspired by nature, travel, color and life in general. My Flower Cards line was developed from my yearly gift-giving creations. And as occasions such as birthdays, babies and weddings occurred frequently, more card lines were developed. Shiny silver designs, yellow ducks and onesies, and travel sketches adorn other cards in my collection. In 2006, I was able to further enhance my collection with a Letterpress series. After one of my card designs was chosen by a local letterpress printer for their New Year’s greeting, I was able to partner with them for the production of my letterpress collection.
