The 27th annual Happy Canyon appreciation award ceremony took place Thursday April 9th in Pendleton. Honorees for 2009 were Lance Dick and brothers Dennis, Gary, Wally and Jeff Zimmerman. The awards have been held every spring since 1982, recognizing outstanding service to the Happy Canyon Pageant. “These awards were created to recognize a few of the many volunteers that work tirelessly, devoting their valuable time to the Happy Canyon Night Show,” Publicity Director Michael Corey said. “This year we have five outstanding examples of service and dedication, and they all have helped to make Happy Canyon what it is today.” Lance Dick has been in the pageant since he was 14. He started off as a raider, then followed his dad into the chief position, where he has remained for more than 20 years. Dick said acting in the pageant has been fun. “You can imagine over the years, odds are something unexpected is going to happen,” Dick said. “But I love Happy Canyon and re-uniting with my extended family every year. This is quite an honor.” Princesses Martel Benson and Shanna Treloar, President Allen Waggoner with Lance Dick. The Zimmerman brothers have become the first group to receive the award. Dennis, Gary, Wally and Jeff have approximately 140 years of combined service to Happy Canyon. All four brothers have had various parts in the Happy Canyon Show and all four have been a part of the hick band and the mounted band. At the awards ceremony Wally Zimmerman recalled how their family first got involved. “Our dad served on the Round-Up board and always had a love for this community,” he said. “Dad preached about getting involved, and serving the community, and that’s something that keeps us coming back, and we are passing the same thing along to our kids.” All four brothers expressed their appreciation for receiving this award. The first Happy Canyon appreciation award recipients were Clarence Burke, Bill Minthorne, Bud Wishart, Ted Johnson, and Tom Simonton.
