Too many factories have warning postings that are cluttered. Simple 3-word warning signs assume a passive, captive audience. Instead of ordering the worker to KEEP OUT, persuade him by showing the consequences that result from ignoring the hazard or give him a telephone number to call in an emergency. Instead of having all the information about a valve buried in an engineer's P&ID file, put this information out into the field, where it can do some good. Before, it was the manager who "knew best" and he, alone, was responsible for vital process information and operating decisions. Flatter hierarchies now mean that this responsibility must be given to all employees...
