Fall 2005 November 5th – Carnegie Hall Neighborhood Concert On Saturday, November 5th, Carnegie Hall and Harmony teamed up to produce a Neighborhood Concert at Brooklyn College. The Wiyos, a Brooklyn-based trio of Joseph Dejarnette on bass; Michael Farkas, on washboard, kazoo, banjo and vocals; and Parrish Ellis on guitar and vocals, featured a mix of country, folk, blues, and ragtime music. Students and parents from Harmony’s NYU and Brooklyn sites attended this performance. October 29th – Juilliard Performance On Saturday, October 29th at 2 p.m., Juilliard’s Fish Tank quintet performed for Harmony students and their parents at the O’Henry Learning Center. The classical concert, performed by Vincent Sangare Balse on piano, Francesca Anderegg on violin, Gillian Gallagher on viola, Jisoo Ok on cello, and Kristoffer Saebo on double bass, included pieces by Beethoven, Mozart, and Schubert among others. Summer 2005 July-August During the summer Harmony initiated its first repertory ensemble. Students from each of Harmony’s Saturday programs were invited to participate in the ensemble every Saturday at the Brooklyn College Conservatory. Spring 2005 May 28th – Spring Recitals at Beacon and Brooklyn College Sites Students at Harmony’s Brooklyn College site will perform in their spring recital on Saturday, May 28th at 10 a.m. in the Levenson Auditorium at Brooklyn College. Students at Harmony’s Beacon site will hold their spring recital later that day at 3 p.m. at the O’Henry Learning Center. All friends and family are welcome to attend! May 21st – Spring Recital at NYU Site Students at Harmony’s NYU site will perform in their spring recital on Saturday, May 21st at 10 a.m. The recital will take place at NYU’s Catholic Center on Thompson Street around the corner from the Kimmel Center where weekly lessons are held. All friends and family are welcome to attend! May 21st – Harvard vs. Yale Charity Polo Match The Charity Network of New York City will feature the Harmony Program at their upcoming fundraiser, the annual Harvard vs. Yale Charity Polo Match. This special event, organized by the Charity Network of New York City, benefits small charities like Harmony that serve disadvantaged children and children with health needs. April 30th – Carnegie Hall/Harmony Neighborhood Concert On Saturday, April 30th, Carnegie Hall and Harmony teamed up to present a rousing performance by Sharon Katz and the Peace Train. Graciously hosted by the Turtle Bay Music School, this performance introduced Harmony families to the traditional music and dance of South Africa while exploring important historical themes. February 19th – Carnegie Hall Family Concert Harmony children and parents attended a family concert at Carnegie Hall featuring the Orchestra of St. Luke's. The highlight of the afternoon featured one of Harmony’s Brooklyn students on stage conducting! Fall 2004 Events December 12th — Harmony Winter Recital Harmony held its winter recital on December 12th at the O’Henry Learning Center. Children from Harmony sites at the Beacon program, NYU, and Brooklyn College took part performing on flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, guitar, bass, drums, keyboard and violin. WFUV radio recorded the performance, and afterwards all guests were treated to a catered reception. December 8th — Harmony Field Trip to Carnegie Hall Harmony children and parents attended Carnegie Hall to hear a concert by the Sphinx organization featuring accomplished African-American and Hispanic classical string players. December 1st — Harmony Music Fair Harmony's first music fair was conducted on December 1st and was hosted by the Center for Arts Education. Representatives of community music schools, public schools of performing arts, and city-wide ensembles from Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx attended as did over 40 Harmony children and their families. September 25th — Performance by Harlequin Thorry and Isaac Koren of the band Harlequin joined Harmony at the Beacon site and performed original songs from their latest CD on acoustic guitar. November 20th — Patrick Seacor from "the Scissor Sisters" Visits Harmony Patrick Seacor, drummer with the internationally popular group, the Scissor Sisters, visited Harmony’s NYU site with a photographer from Rolling Stone Magazine. October 23rd — Performance by Carol Sudhalter Carol Sudhalter, award-winning saxophonist and accomplished music educator, visited our Brooklyn site to perform for Harmony students. October 16th — Deborah Weisz Visits Harmony Students Deborah Weisz, renowned professional trombonist and music teacher joined Harmony students at our Beacon site. October 2nd — Performance by Muscian Maxine Carol Martin Experienced music teacher and jazz clarinetist, Maxine Carol Martin, performed for students at Harmony’s NYU site. Summer 2004 Events August 10th — MTV Music Studios Harmony students and parents received a guided tour of the MTV Music Studios. July 8th — Charity Network Rocks New York Charity Network of NYC presents an event to support local charities, including Harmony. Spring 2004 Events May 22nd — Harmony Spring Recital Harmony holds its spring recital for students in its Manhattan and Brooklyn programs at the O’Henry Learning Center in Manhattan. May 8th — The Ahiri Institute of Indian Classical Music Harmony students visited the Ahiri Institute for Indian classical music where master musicians performed for Harmony on traditional Indian instruments. Winter 2003/2004 Events February 29th — Harmony Winter Fundraiser Harmony held its winter fundraiser on Sunday, February 29th February 14th — Harmony Winter Recitals Harmony held its winter recitals at the O’Henry Learning Center in Manhattan and at the Brooklyn College Conservatory. December 6th — Don Byron (CANCELLED FOR SNOW) World-renowned clarinetist, composer and recording artist November 22nd — Dotti Anita Taylor Professional classical and jazz flutist and pianist, and music educator November 11th — Antonio Hart Jazz alto saxophonist, composer, Grammy nominated recording artist, and Professor of Music at Queens College. November 1st — Metropolitan Museum of Art Guided Tour Harmony students and parents received a guided tour of the Ancient Musical Instruments Exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The tour was led by visiting scholar, Constance Old. October 18th — Miriam Sullivan, Ronnie Williams US Jazz Embassador to Latin America and accomplished bassist, Miriam Sullivan, and Award-winning percussionist, Ronnie Williams. Fall 2003 Events October 16th — Harmony Fundraiser Harmony welcomed in the fall season with its second fundraiser in 2003. The event was held at the loft of Matthew Ervin and included musical performances by Lourds, Amy Hedrick, Noah Howe, Julia Kotchmar, and Matt Turk. Summer 2003 Events July 31st — “Happy Birthday, Jerry!” A musical birthday celebration for Grateful Dead legend Jerry Garcia was held on July 31st to benefit Harmony. June 28th — First Day of Harmony Summer Classes Classes were held at St. Peter's Church, 619 Lexington Avenue at 54th Street and ran through August 9th. June 21st — Fundraiser at Studio 18 Gallery A Harmony fundraiser was held at the Studio 18 Gallery, 18 Warren Street, New York, NY 10007 Spring/Winter2003 Events May 17th — Harmony Spring Recital Harmony Spring Recital held at the New School University May 3rd — Lecture from Dr. Aaron Flagg, Director of Educational Outreach, The Juilliard School Dr. Aaron Flagg, Director of Educational Outreach at the Juilliard School, spoke to Harmony participants about Juilliard's Music Advancement Program, a highly selective instrumental program for African-American, Native American, and Latino-American children. April 19th — Thembisa Mshaka Senior Advertising Copy Writer, Sony Music, R & B Hip-Hop Journalist, and independent music supervisor for film April 12th — Kindred Spirit This all-female ensemble includes Kim Thompson, drums; Miriam Sullivan, bass; Tia Fuller, saxophone; and Rachel Eckroth, piano. Created in 2001, they have performed at the Savannah Jazz Festival, the Tony Williams Jazz Festival, and the Schomburg Women’s Jazz Festival to rave reviews. April 5th — Daniel Sadownick Grammy nominated percussionist, composer, arranger and bandleader in jazz, pop, R&B and alternative music. Sadownick can be heard on over 70 recordings, including Nicholas Payton, Michael Brecker, Sepia, and Meshell Ndege O’cello. March 15th — Ravi Best Trumpeter, composer and Broadway musician performing in the Broadway musical, 42nd Street. March 8th — Brandon McCune Jazz, R&B and gospel music pianist, arranger, composer, music educator, former US Jazz Embassador. McCune has toured with Betty Carter, Wynton Marsalis, Terrence Blanchard, and Antonio Hart and recorded with Abbey Lincoln, Nnenna Freelon and Lenora Helm. March 1st — Carnegie Hall’s Children’s Series Harmony participants and parents attended Carnegie Hall’s Children’s Series where they heard a performance by the Emerson String Quartet and storytelling by Charlotte Blake Alston. February 21st — Antonio Hart Jazz alto saxophonist, composer, Grammy nominated recording artist for Enja Records, Professor of Music at Queens College. Hart has ten solo recordings and guest appearances on over 50 other recordings with jazz, fusion and R&B artists. February 8th — Harmony Day This kick-off celebration of Harmony at the New School University included a visit from Mayor Bloomberg’s Deputy Mayor for Policy who delivered a Mayoral Proclamation declaring February 8, 2003 in the City of New York “Harmony Day."
