The concept of the head and neck oncologic fellowship initially based at Legacy Emanuel Hospital began in 1990 when Dr. Eric J. Dierks left the faculty of the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School to join Dr. Bryce Potter in developing an academically affiliated group practice, Head and Neck Surgical Associates, in Portland, Oregon. With formal training in both otolaryngology/head and neck surgery, as well as oral and maxillofacial surgery, Dr. Potter and Dr.

SPOHNC is a patient-directed, self-help organization dedicated to meeting the needs of oral and head and neck cancer patients. SPOHNC, founded in 1991 by an oral cancer survivor, addresses the broad emotional, physical and humanistic needs of this population.

Head and Neck Surgical Associates boasts a team of oral and maxillofacial surgeons with advanced training in head and neck surgery. They work in close consultation with orthodontists to provide the most comprehensive and experienced care to patients with a wide variety of developmental and congenital disorders of the teeth, jaws, maxillofacial and craniofacial regions. In addition, Head and Neck Surgical Associates offers comprehensive, state-of-the-art reconstructive surgery for congenital, post-traumatic, and cancer treatment-related problems of the head and neck.
