Hispanic Housing Development Corporation relies upon a broad network of partners to complete all of its developments. The members of our board of directors are leaders in real estate, business, education, and their communities. They help us apply best practices of the private sector to not-for-profit development. Our 190-person staff shares a common mission and a genuine commitment to helping others. Eduardo Camacho joined HHDC's board of directors in 2007. He combines experience in the finance and mortgage industries with experience in city government. As Emerging Markets director/Midwest Region for First American Title Insurance Company, Mr. Camacho developed strategies to increase the company's performance in minority markets. From 2001 to 2005, he was a deputy commissioner in the City of Chicago's Department of Housing. While there, his responsibilities included implementing the City Mortgage Program, which provided approximately $40 million in mortgage financing to homebuyers, and administering a $200 million lending budget. Before becoming deputy commissioner, Mr. Camacho was a branch manager for Irwin Mortgage Corporation, where he developed a marketing plan to help Irwin enter Chicago's Hispanic market. Mr. Camacho has a bachelor's degree from Northeastern Illinois University, a master's degree from the University of Chicago School of Social Service Administration, and an M.B.A. from the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business.

Lalo Edery has been chief operating officer of Tropic Construction since 2004. He has more than 20 years of experience in large and complex projects, ranging from $10 million to $500 million, in the United States and internationally. His most notable projects include Wyndham Chicago Hotel, 600 North Michigan, Chicago, 201 North Wells, Chicago, Ritz-Carlton Hotel, Barcelona, Spain, Hyatt Resort, Murcia, Spain, Wyndham Hotel, San Juan, Puerto Rico, and Torre Mayor, a 60-story office building in Mexico City. Mr. Edery holds a bachelor's degree in civil engineering from George Washington University, an M.B.A. from the University of Chicago, and additional studies in real estate development from the master's program at the University of Cataluña, Spain.

It takes jobs to make communities work. We work hard to create them. We offer direct employment opportunities: HHDC currently employs 190 people and often has employment opportunities to help manage and maintain our portfolio of properties. Tropic Construction regularly hires local residents to help build its properties, and actively seeks relationships with Latino, African-American, and women-owned subcontractors. We offer workforce development programs that help our residents find, hold, and improve their jobs. Programs include English as a second language, computer essentials, and training to become a senior aide. We provide Roldan Fellowships, which include an internship and scholarships for Latino graduate students studying planning, housing, and community development.
