Description
History Atlas, an open-source application for reading and writing history, has two components, Browser and Scribe. Users may toggle between the two components by single-clicking the words Browser or Scribe at the left side of the application window. Both components are powered by Shockwave, a free, downloadable plug-in from Adobe that must be installed in your Web browser. Both feature a comprehensive online Help function, accessed by clicking the button in the upper-right corner of the application window. History Atlas Browser presents the complete globe in 12 detailed perspectives; with the movement of the cursor, geographical place-names appear in the Status Window at upper right. Users may explore several thousand years of history by selecting any time period in a range of 5 increments from 1728 years to a single month. History Atlas Browser features historical Threads consisting of 2 or more related events in any of 12 general categories. Featured Threads, displayed above on this page, change often and may be viewed by nonmembers as well as members. Recent Threads are available only to members, who may also use our search engine to variously explore the entire, ever-expanding History Atlas archive. Users may also browse history by selecting any of the 12 perspectives, any time-frame, and one or more categories. History Atlas Scribe, a tool for writing history, is available only to members. Users may enter Threads of their own authorship on any topic. Thread Authors may select locations from our database of over 250,000 cities, villages and public buildings, or may add a new location by entering their own coordinates. Authors may use History Atlas for pleasure or to organize their own research; such entries, unless and until submitted for general publication as a Thread, remain invisible to other users. All Threads submitted by registered members will be considered for nonexclusive online publication in History Atlas, for which there is no monetary compensation. Membership is free and requires only a user name and a user-selected password. Electric Prism is a new media design company offering a broad range of technology-based services.
