What is Backflow? Backflow is the unwanted reversal of water flow from its intended direction in any pipeline or plumbing system. What is a Backflow Preventer? Backflow preventers are plumbing devices to prevent water flowing in the opposite direction it is intended to flow such as from a customers plumbing system back into the public water supply. Is it really important to install backflow preventers? The Tennessee Division of Water Supply requires all public water systems to operate an on-going program to protect the water supply from cross-connections. Why does the customer have to pay for and install the backflow preventer? The backflow device is installed to protect the public water supply from possible hazards associated with the customer's plumbing system. The potential cross-connection belongs to the customer and not the utility. Unprotected cross-connections are prohibited by state regulations, plumbing codes, and local codes.
