Hohokus Inn

The Ho-Ho-Kus Inn is Jersey sandstone structure believed to date from the 1790's. The stories about its origin are many and so contradictory that it is difficult to find the actual facts. Originally it was the private residence for the John "Jake" Zabriskie family in the era immediately following the Revolutionary War. He prospered with his mills and owned most of the business section of Ho-Ho-Kus and the northern Turnpike which amounted to 57 acres plus 50 acres in what is now known as Ringwood. When Zabriskie died, the building continued as a private home for a time. It even served as a parsonage for the Christ Episcopal Church in Ringwood. The Ho-Ho-Kus Inn had many names: the Zabriskie House, the Villa Inn, The Mansion House, the Wayside Inn, and the Washington Inn. Wealthy people from New York, who spent their summers in Newport and Tuxedo Park, would stop at the old Mansion House while the owners and horses rested and refreshed themselves before the long journey ahead. The old Mansion House was about to be torn down in the late 1920s when Mrs. H.T.B. Jacquelin purchased it, thus saving for future generations that reminder of past times. It became an inn and a long line of managers and owners were involved. In 1941, the town bought the Inn and in 1943 leased it to Mr. Edward Bindle.
