Honeywell Golf Course

Description

The Honeywell Golf Course was established in 1980 as a cooperative effort between the Honeywell Foundation and the city of Wabash. The original course belonged to the Wabash Country Club and was opened after World War II. The front nine was constructed on land that was part of the Honeywell estate. Mark and Eugenia Honeywell donated that land and Mr. Honeywell's former movie studio to the new Wabash Country Club at the end of the war. The studio became the club house and acreage bounded by Indiana 15 and the Niccum Road (now Divsion Road) became the golf course. The old country club, located at the end of Inez Street within the present city limits of Wabash, burned in about 1940. The club's nine-hole golf course north of Harrison Avenue and east of Wabash Street continued in operation until eary in the war. In 1944, a group of Wabash civic leaders announced plans to establish a new country club and golf course on land not far from the present facilities. Mr. and Mrs. Honeywell then offered a large portion of their estate to the new club. The remainder of the estate eventually became Honeywell Gardens, an area of formal gardens, trees and flowering shrubs managed by Honeywell Foundation.
