In October of 2001, a small group of paddlers gathered to talk about forming our own team. The group of twelve met several times to decide what we wanted and how to get it. We literally started from nothing. In order to file Articles of Incorporation, we had to have a name, and so Hope Afloat Breast Cancer Survivors Dragon Boat Team was born as the first BCS team founded in Philadelphia and in the State of Pennsylvania. We needed a mission - we met and refined our ideas and goals and put them into words. "We participate in dragonboating and dragonboat racing to raise awareness of breast cancer and to encourage others diagnosed with breast cancer to lead full and active lives". In 2005, we further refined our mission "...to encourage and support breast cancer survivors to "Awaken the Dragon" within them through the sport of Dragon Boat Racing. Regardless of age or athletic ability, we strive to show how to live a life full of wellness, competition, and fun." By January 2002 all our approvals were in place - we were officially a 501 (3) not-for-profit tax-exempt corporation. On to buying a boat, finding dock space, and seeking new members to share the joy of dragonboating. Soon we had 25 brave members, all without a press release! By September 2002, Hope Afloat had earned a Gold and Silver at the 3rd IDBF World Club Crew Championships in Rome, Italy.
