Welcome Rotarians and friends of Rotary! Whether you are a first-time or a frequent visitor to the Rotary Club of Houma's website, I hope that the information and pictures are informative and illustrate the work of our club and its' members. The current membership stands at 88 active Rotarians, ranging in age from mid-twenties to ninety plus, making our club extremely diverse. John Kenny, Rotary International President for 2009-2010 has selected, "The Future of Rotary Is In Your Hands," as the theme for this year. Rotarians are committed to "Service Above Self," volunteering locally and addressing needs worldwide. On a local level, the Rotary Club of Houma has offered "hands-on" assistance in many areas of our parish. Helping to clear personal property for the elderly residents of our parish, delivering cleaning supplies and food products to shelters following storms, distributing dictionaries to every third grade student in the parish, spreading Christmas cheer and sharing gifts with students who attend the School for Exceptional Children, and collecting books and sporting goods for far-away countries to participate internationally have kept our members busy this past year. Continuing the "hands-on" work with the Interact Club at H. L. Bourgeois High School, attending Camp RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Award), and assisting with the Challenge Day program at area junior highs and high schools. The newest addition to our Family of Rotary is the first Early Act Club in Terrebonne Parish. Students at Mulberry Elementary School have a full year of activities planned, from maintaining a garden at their school to assisting with an international project. The Rotary Club of Houma (RCH) is a Named Endowment Benefactor of The Terrebonne Foundation for Academic Excellence (TFAE) in Public Education. Annually, teacher grants are awarded by TFAE in the name of RCH, in memory of Doug Stire and Ron Gautreaux, former club members. On the international level our club is collaborating with other Rotary Clubs in District 6200 to sponsor a water/literacy project in Jeremie, Haiti this year. One water well will service 500 men, women and children and fulfill a major objective of RI President John Kenny, "If Rotary is to stay relevant in the 21st century, it must work to improve access to clean water, combat hunger, and expand literacy."
