Souderton, Pa. - The Univest Grand Prix returns to Souderton and Doylestown on Sept. 11-12 with a dynamic and exciting new race course for Saturday’s UCI 1.2 (International Cycling Union pro/am category) road race and what promises to be the strongest field in the history of the 13-year-old North American classic. The 83-mile race will now consist of 11 laps of a 5.8-mile, figure eight course through the roller-coaster roads of Souderton, Telford and Franconia before tightening into five finishing laps on a 3.8-mile circuit in Souderton and Telford. The racers will face the challenging Wile Avenue hill in Souderton 16 times. “This exciting and dynamic new race course will offer superb spectator views of a UCI road race and represents our vision of the future North American road racing format,” said race organizer John Eustice, president of Sparta Cycling Incorporated “It’s a modern take on the classic road race with much more excitement for the fans who will see the field twice on each lap in a shorter but more intense circuit.” The strongest field in the event history is expected as many of the United States top professionals use the weekend as a final test before the USA Cycling National Professional Road Race and Time Trial Championships a week later in Greenville, S.C. The new course and elite field will create a markedly improved event for spectators. Since the race now consists of 16 laps, fans will have more opportunities to experience the course from various vantage points, such as the Wile Avenue hill or the Family Fun Zone area with its twice-a-lap views of the competition. Spectators will have the opportunity to take shuttles to various points along the course, before returning to the finish line for the dramatic conclusion of North America’s most prestigious pro/am bicycle race. The popular Cyclosportif has been reformatted for 2010 as well. The ride will now be held entirely on the 3.8-mile finishing circuit of the Univest Grand Prix. Families, new riders and dedicated cyclists alike will have a two-hour window to see how many laps they can accomplish on a professional race course. Racing continues on Sunday, Sept. 12 with the thrilling Univest Criterium of Doylestown. This year marks the seventh anniversary of the popular event, which provides a second day of fast-paced, circuit-style racing on a 1.4-mile course. In addition to the professional race, the Doylestown Business and Community Alliance will once again hold the Doylestown Arts Festival. The race route will showcase the festival by providing spectators and attendees an opportunity to watch the race while enjoying the work of local artists. Saturday’s road race will be broadcast live on WNPV-1440 AM and announcements will be forthcoming regarding television coverage for the event. During the race, spectators in Souderton can enjoy the Family Fun Zone from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in Univest Plaza, which includes children’s activities, photo opportunities with community displays, giveaways, regional foods and more.
