Description

HUI (previously known as Household Utilities, Inc.) has been in the Kiel area since 1933, originally started by Albert Deibele Sr., a German immigrant to the Kiel area. Albert, an electrician by trade, started an electrical contracting business in conjunction with a retail appliance store. Over the years, the company prospered, branching out in the heating and ventilating business. In the late 1950's, Albert Sr. was joined in the business by his son Albert Jr. (Abbie), an electrical engineer. Under their combined efforts, the company continued to expand, such that in 1961, land was purchased and a new building erected, which was the start of the company's current location. In 1968, an addition was completed which enabled the sheet metal contracting business to move to a much more spacious plant. During this period, Abbie transitioned into becoming president of HUI, and Albert Sr. went into retirement. In 1973, a younger brother, Charlie, joined the company. His early years were spent learning the business. By the mid 70's, Charlie, disenchanted with construction, visualized a new market, separate from the contracting business, namely, manufacturing products for other companies. This was a significant change for the company, shifting from a construction, project-bidding world to an on-going customer relationship, manufacturing business. With the support of his older brother, Charlie initiated a sales effort contacting companies throughout the state. With ongoing persistence, this portion of HUI caught hold.
