Description
The central core of practice at Hidden Valley Zen Center is susok'kan, also known as the Extended OutBreath. Even for koan-practice students, susok'kan is still the basis of practice. A simple yet challenging practice requiring patience and perseverance, it goes like this: Seat yourself in an upright, gently erect position, with your back straight, body taut but not tight, shoulders and belly relaxed. Hands are clasped in the lap, close to the body, in either of the two zazen hand positions. Head is erect, eyes are open and gaze is soft-focus.
It's especially important to report in to Roshi every few days while doing a Personal Term Intensive; don't let a week go by without making contact unless you know that Roshi is in sesshin. Going it alone as compared to taking part in a group Term Intensive can be more difficult, and sometimes you can get a shot in the arm and renewed determination if your practice is flagging or your commitment wobbling. Despite the fact that a Personal Term Intensive can be more difficult-or perhaps because of it!-it contains the potential for truly taking your practice to a new and deeper level.
Hidden Valley Zen Center was founded in 1968 by American Tien-li Lola Lee, Osho, long-time student of Dr. Henry Chikuen Kugai Platov, whose primary teacher was Sokei-an [Shigetsu Sasaki, founder of the First Zen Institute of America in New York City].
