The Factory Grade ® test is the ideal tool to verify the quality of facilities’ aging cable assets, and IMCORP has the proven experience of providing high quality results during the compressed timeframe of a scheduled shutdown. This test accurately locates all Partial Discharge (PD) activity within a cable system enabling facility managers to proactively make repairs before a failure occurs.

Featured here are medium voltage feeder cables at a wind farm substation in South Dakota. These cables are the site’s most critical link, handling the output of 10 to 20 turbines. The IMCORP Factory Grade® test found that all of the cable terminations were not IEEE 48 compliant. The site operator initially placed the blame on the manufacturer, but this proved to be unlikely, as cold shrink terminations from multiple manufacturers were used.

These images show cross-sections of a medium voltage power cable that was installed at a wind farm in Wyoming. In this case, the IMCORP Factory Grade® test indicated partial discharge activity on a section of cable. The PD location was not immediately apparent after the cable was excavated and visually inspected. As the same phenomenon had occurred in one other cable at the site, the site managers decided to send one cable back to the manufacturer and one cable to IMCORP headquarters in Connecticut.
