In A Hand Basket

Linda Boyle Gibson is a native Hoosier who has lived in Bloomington since 1976. After trying a craft store basket weaving kit in the mid 1980s, she was hooked and soon began to study the art and craft with master weavers from many different cultures. In 1989, when Linda informed her husband that she was going to change professional direction from a full-time dental hygienist to a basket maker and teacher, he quipped, "Well, there's a business that will go to Hades in a hand basket." And that is how the business name, ". . . in a hand basket", was born. (Yes, the marriage has also lasted!)Linda specializes in traditional, functional baskets with unusual accents and bright colors. "I love teaching as much as I love weaving baskets. Teaching helps perpetuate basketry, which is the oldest of crafts predating cloth weaving and pot shaping. I am fortunate to be able to travel around the country teaching and talking baskets. The wonderful and interesting people I have met through baskets have truly enriched my life."For almost five years, ". . . in a hand basket" had a downtown Bloomington retail location which was a studio for basket supplies, gifts and classes. In the fall of 2002, another professional direction evolved when Linda had to leave that delightful shop and move back to her home studio. Downsizing from a complete line of basket supplies, Linda now specializes in selling her trademark; the bold, vibrant color combinations of dyed reed and seagrass. In September 2003, Linda became a member of the Brown County Craft Gallery in Nashville, Indiana, where she sells her baskets and works two days a month. Teaching is still an important part of her life, and when she isn't teaching baskets locally or around the county, you will find her on Monday nights at Yarns Unlimited in Bloomington, teaching knitting.
