Independent Forensics is a forensic DNA laboratory that provides DNA testing and conceives, develops, perfects, manufactures, markets and sells new products to forensic laboratories worldwide. Our staff has over 60 combined years of experience in DNA, molecular biology, forensics, paternity, human identification and related scientific fields.

Dr. Boonlayangoor is Laboratory Director at IFI. Dr. Boonlayangoor comes to IFI with over 20 years of experience expertise in Molecular Genetics, Forensic Sciences, Paternity Testing and Histocompatibility testing. He was the Laboratory Director at the DNA & Immunogenetics Institute, Illinois Masonic Medical Center and an Adjunct Professor of Forensic Sciences and Immunogenetics at the University of Illinois at Chicago. DNA forensics for the legal profession – IFI’s staff has extensive experience in training and educating law enforcement and legal professionals in the aspects of forensic science in support of their cases or investigations.

IFI’s staff has significant experience in consulting on the process and procedures of DNA forensic testing and can explain the science of DNA and it’s use in paternity and forensic testing.

The purpose of analyzing sexual assault evidence (a rape kit) is to provide a DNA profile of the assailant. The DNA profile obtained can then be compared to the DNA profile of either a suspect or felons in a data base to provide evidence that will aid the criminal justice system to apprehend and convict the perpetrator. Unfortunately there are now an estimated 400,000 rape kits that remain unanalyzed in forensic laboratories in the United States, a backlog that has correctly been labeled a “national embarrassment”.
