The Town of McCandless is protected from fire and other civil emergencies by a corps of volunteers--100% volunteers who receive no monetary reimbursement for their services. The town's fire corps is comprised of three independent but mutually-supporting companies which operate four physical stations throughout the town. Each of these companies hold training sessions every Tuesday evening, with the third Tuesday of each month reserved for "business" meetings, where the companies take care of administrative matters. We invite you to spend a few minutes exploring our sites to learn about these companies. What, exactly, do they do? What types of equipment do they use? What sort of training is required? What can you do to help? The HIGHLAND VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT is located near the former Espe Elementary School, just off Highland Road at 8705 Harold Place. This station has just completed an extensive renovation project to better house its four firefighting vehicles and active firefighters. One very important piece of equipment in the Highland stable is an engine sporting a 105-foot ladder/tower that enables Highland to reach the tallest buildings in our town and in neighboring communities. Highland VFD is led by Chief Mark Pierson and President Shawn O'Brien. Highland has a program for Junior Firefighters, who may join the department at the age of 16 in order to learn the art of firefighting without being exposed to life-threatening risks (Senior Firefighters must be at least 18 years old). Highland VFD has several active female firefighters as well as an Associate program which accommodates individuals who wish to participate in the department in a non-firefighting role.
