Lexmark is a fairly late entry into the laser printer market. Or, one could say they've been around forever as well – you see, they began life in 1991 as an IBM spinoff company. Basically, IBM wanted to get out of the printer manufacturing business, and sold their printer manufacturing to an investment firm. Based in Lexington KY, the new company was named Lexmark. Toner cartridges were part of this new company as well, since IBM sold the printer supply manufacturing as well. One aspect that sets Lexmark apart from most other printer manufacturers is the company generally stays in the printer/document management industry (although since they've only been around – officially - a few decades, there's still plenty of time to expand into other areas!) Besides the Lexmark brand printers and toner cartridges, they are also the OEM (original equipment manufacturer) for Dell and (obviously) IBM brands. In terms of technology, the company has made several strides. A good example is the Lexmark "E-series" printers, which are known for their use of a single miniature rotating mirror to reflect the laser.

MICR stands for Magnetic Ink Character Recognition. It is a technology used primarily by the banking industry. It was developed as a way for both humans and computers to easily read the same characters. The best example of the technology is the account number and routing number at the bottom of your checks, which is printed with MICR toner. This allows a scanning machine to read the magnetic characters rather than having to read the characters 'visually', as in optical character recognition.
