University of South Carolina Campus History - The University of South Carolina was founded in 1805 and chartered in 1906 as the University of South Carolina. The university was a symbol of the South during the antebellum period. Graduates played a central role in South Carolina's secession from the Union during the Civil War. Today, 11 buildings make up the historic area of campus, also known as the Horseshoe. The Horseshoe is on the list of National Register of Historic Places.
