Many smaller pianos?mainly spinets, but also some consoles?made in the sixties and seventies were made very cheaply, resulting in a lower quality average than in previous decades. Spinets have been a popular size because they are so unobtrusive, fit well with the decor of smaller rooms, and because they are inexpensive. The view of a piano more as a piece of furniture may have originated as a gimmick by the manufacturers to increase piano sales after the Great Depression. In any case, the smaller sizes became very popular, so that full-size uprights were no longer made after about 1930. As pianos were marketed in a small size, however, and as many manufacturers tried to keep up the sales, many pianos were made less and less expensive. This cost-cutting strategy often resulted in sloppier manufacturing, mediocre designs, cheaper materials that wear out sooner, or a lack of attention to the responsiveness of the piano keys and action. Nonetheless, with proper attention and service, even a spinet piano can be made to play fairly well.
