Island Construction Company Incorporated started as King Brothers Construction Company in the mid 1950's, headquartered on the King Brother's farms on Yonges Island, South Carolina. The King brothers, Fred, Richard, and Everett each farmed large areas of Edisto and Yonges Island, in an attempt to find work for their farm employees during the off season. Soon they worked all over the low country clearing land, ditching fields, building roads, and general earth work during periods that the men and equipment were not needed on the farms. As work volume increased, it soon became a year round job. With this increase also came the necessity to incorporate. In January 1961, the company was incorporated into Island Construction Company Incorporated In the late 1960's, as the work load increased, it became necessary to move to Charleston. Shortly after the move, the President, Fred King passed away and Mel Moore who was working as an engineer and surveyor for the company assumed leadership, and purchased the three brother's interest in the early 1970's. In 1976, Island moved to it's present location, North Charleston. As if history were repeating itself Mel Moore passed away October 1, 1977 and John Bailey, a distant cousin of the Kings, who worked as an engineer and surveyor for Island took over as president in November 1977. Several years later John Bailey purchased the Moore's interest in Island Construction. Just in case there is a connection we do not plan on moving again! With a plant site of over 25 acres, centrally located off of a frontage road to I-26 and 1.5 miles North of I-526, we have the best location to service clients in the Charleston area. Throughout Island Construction's history each of the three owners have brought positive views, ideas, and ideals into the company, but the one key ingredient has been our people. We have the best group of construction professionals that exist. It shows in their work, in their attitude, and their ability to change to constraining difficult conditions. People who have worked here only ten years are considered new. Most employees have over twenty-five years service with at least ten over thirty years. This brings a vast pool of knowledge to train new people and solve any problem.
