Area Economy: Harris and Galveston Counties are located along the upper Texas Gulf Coast and includes the Houston metropolitan area. Galveston County faces the Gulf of Mexico to the Southeast and is bordered by Brazoria County to the southwest, Harris County to the northwest and Chambers County to the northeast. Friendswood is conveniently located between central Houston and Galveston, with easy access to Hobby Airport, George Bush Intercontinental Airport, Ellington Field and Clover Field. Friendswood is in the middle of the Houston Biocorridor, including the world-renowned Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. The Houston - Galveston - Brazoria Consolidated Metropolitan Statistical Area (CMSA) is the ninth largest population area in the country with almost 4 million people. Houston, the nation's fourth largest city, is at the heart of the CMSA. Income and employment in the area are strong. Although the Houston Ship Channel provided the main stimulus for the economy in early years, oil, refining, and petrochemicals spurred rapid expansion. Now with the aerospace industry, in close proximity to Friendswood, unemployment remains relatively low, employment bases are stable and the average household income was reported to be 12% higher in the bay area. Climate: In the heart of the sunbelt, Friendswood enjoys a subtropical climate where outdoor sports are practiced year round and the growing season extends well into November. Winter days are mild with a few temperature dips below the freezing mark. After one of the infrequent frosts, it is not uncommon for the temperature to rise to a balmy 60 or 70 degrees during the day. Spring and fall are the most pleasant times with warm days and cool nights. Summers are hot and perfect for those who enjoy the Gulf. The area is blessed with abundant rainfall which, combined with the favorable temperatures, produces a growing season of more than 290 days. With an average monthly temperature in January of 43 to 62 F and in June 73 - 89 F, average yearly rainfall is 51 inches. Prevailing winds are from the southeast. Friendswood History Fig orchards, satsuma orange orchards, and rice fields once flourished where Friendswood homes now stand. The last vestiges of them and the homes that the Quakers constructed are nearly gone, but the legacy left by those founders and early settlers remains. That legacy is the heritage of a way of life that did more to shape the character of the community than any brick and mortar buildings ever could.
