In the 33 years Pipe Prop inventor Jim Brown worked as an HVAC contractor in the Fort Worth, TX, area, he had seen the make-do, conventional way of propping drainage pipe on commercial roofs. It was a time consuming, labor-intensive mess – 4X4s or landscape ties or whatever else was handy, cobbled together to hold up pipe. And then you hoped it didn't fall over in a stiff breeze, not to mention a heavy thunderstorm.
