Jim Fraker and Roger Guertner, working as surveyor and engineer, decided to begin a consulting firm specializing in land development consulting services in 1973. A friendly coin toss determined the initials of the company to be JR as opposed to RJ, and they were in business. The official company name at that time was registered with the Secretary of State as JR Developers, Ltd. Throughout the 1970's the company name developed into a prominent force in the Denver metropolitan area in surveying and engineering for private land development clients.JR Developers eventually became aware that potential clients mistook them as Developers of raw ground into finished lots for builders. In the early 1980's, JR changed the name to JR Engineering to distinguish itself from an investor/developer. They were after all, engineers and surveyors.From a 4-man shop in 1973 to 120 employees in 1985, JR positioned itself as the foremost expert in the southern Denver metropolitan area, developing lands in Douglas, Arapahoe, and Jefferson counties. JR Engineering subdivided the majority of Ken Caryl Ranch, for example.
