While the origins of JMS began in 1832 when Thomas Watson bought the second seat on the NYSE, the firm as we know it in the present day really began to take shape when Colonel Robert L. Montgomery, co-founder of Montgomery Clothier & Tyler (renamed Janney & Company in 1911 when Walter Janney joined the firm) left his firm and in 1929 started another firm called Montgomery Scott and Company. Subsequently, the two firms founded by Col. Montgomery reunited in 1971 as Janney Montgomery Scott.
