Thankful For Many Things Sometimes in life all we can ask for is a chance. A chance to get something positive started and take it from there. That's the story with Randy McCullum of Quitman, Missouri. Years ago in the 1940's it was his folks that got that chance from within the family, in this case it was Uncle Elmer and Aunt Ethel. Randy (right in photo) has fond memories of Uncle Elmer, a person who always put others before himself and was willing to give loved ones an opportunity as long as they had ambition, drive and vision to move forward. Randy's folks took that challenge and made the best of it, as a matter of fact Randy still lives on the "home place" today, raising crops and tending to his cattle. He has good help too. Amongst others, Craig Peter (left in photo) is someone Randy can rely on when the going gets tough. A couple of years ago when Randy was in a terrible car wreck that shattered his hip, a young Craig Peter came to his farm and got the work done while Randy recuperated for nearly a month in an area hospital. Randy is extremely grateful to his neighbors, a thought not lost on many rural folks who have depended on good, dependable neighbors to give them a hand when needed over the years. One of those good neighbors is Joe Giesken, who at almost 93 years-of-age is still farming fulltime near Burlington Junction and doing great.. Overall, Randy's crops look good this year, he's looking to plant some winter wheat and his cattle herd is healthy and very productive; seven sets of twins have been born into the herd this year. Randy, also a loyal KMA listener and KMA Skywatcher is blessed to be surrounded by good people. It's something he gives thanks for every day. Clarke McGrath Works with Agronomists and Farmers All Over Iowa As Clarke McGrath saw his dad, Jim, work in the COOP business for many years, he thought that might be the career for him, and it was for around 10 years. Since that time the Afton, Iowa native has worked for Iowa State University in a number of areas, including the latest as Partner Program Manager/Agronomist with the ISU Corn Soybean Initiative. As Clarke's dad' career took him to Northeast Nebraska, so did the journey for Clarke and his two sisters, as Clarke spent his high school years in Allen, Nebraska. Clarke married a Creston native, his wife Meg is a teacher in the Harlan school district. They have two children. In his involvement with the ISU Corn/Soybean Initiative, Clarke and the agronomists that work with him are the conduits that keep ISU's research and development directly tied with agribusinesses around the state. Clarke is also busy in other areas as he officiates high school football on Friday nights and is also a firefighter on Harlan's firefighting unit. Recently, after a recreational basketball game in Harlan, Clarke helped save one of his friend's life after he suffered a heart attack. With the help of outstanding CPR and the assistance of those medical experts that followed in the process, his friend's life was saved. Clarke can't stress enough how important it is for all of us to know even basic CPR.
