Our core business is providing project management services and expert real estate advice to clients during the planning and pre-construction phases of development projects. All real estate projects—whether a single building or an entire campus—involve myriad decisions and skilled management to define the project's goals, select the appropriate development team, establish the project's schedule and budget, and formulate an effective development strategy. KBA assists clients in navigating the complexities of the real estate development process to achieve their desired results. We also have extensive experience with the public sector and the various public approvals that affect development.
More generally, KBA helps both experienced developers and non-real estate businesses and organizations navigate the maze of government agencies and offices involved in the development process. KBA assists clients by serving as liaison and intermediary as they negotiate agreements with public entities or apply for land use and other governmental approvals. KBA assists clients with environmental review processes (SEQRA and CEQR) and with the City’s Uniform Land Use Review Procedure (ULURP). KBA is experienced in working with a variety of government agencies, including the NYC Economic Development Corporation, the Empire State Development Corporation, the Landmarks Preservation Commission, the Board of Standards and Appeals, and the Department of City Planning.
Nick has professional experience in both the private and non-profit sectors. Prior to joining KBA, Nick worked for Related Management, managing two low-income housing properties in midtown Manhattan. As an Assistant Property Manager, he was the primary point-of-contact for residents and support staff.
K. Backus & Associates, Inc. (KBA) is a real estate development consulting firm founded in 1997. We work primarily with universities and nonprofit organizations, and with private developers and businesses engaged in public/private development projects.
Since 1997, KBA has worked with fifteen premier institutions of higher education, providing services ranging from campus planning support and selection of development partners to serving as “staff extension” for major campus development projects.
