Description

Tom was born and raised in Connecticut, assembled a non-standard education at several colleges and universities including New York University, Yale, and the University of Vermont while engaged in social and political activism (civil rights; anti-war) in the 60s, and playing in a variety of rock ‘n’ roll and bluegrass bands. He trained as a carpenter and contractor, ran commercial construction projects in Boston and Vermont, and apprenticed with historic preservation and design professionals. He earned a Masters of Architecture at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute while spearheading preservation work in Vermont at both the community and statewide levels. He has lived in Vermont since 1971, has chaired the Vermont Advisory Council on Historic Preservation, while continuing his involvement in social and political activism, most recently around the legitimacy of the Iraq invasion in which his son participated as a US Marine. He continues to be a statewide advocate and participant in preservation planning, and does underwater archaeology in his spare time. Tom lives in Cornwall, Vermont with his wife and their border collie.
