The area that is now known as Sun City was formerly a cotton farm about 35 minutes northwest of Phoenix, Arizona. The Del Webb Corporation bought the land in the late 1950's and began the master plan for future development of the area. Sun City became a reality on January 1, 1960 when the Del Webb Development Company opened a shopping center, motel, golf course, recreation center and 5 model homes. Since it was planned to be a retirement community, at least one member of each household had to be fifty-five years of age and no permanent resident could be under nineteen years of age. Since then, Sun City has continued to grow and evolve into one of the most accepted adult communities of its kind in the entire world. Sun City is now home to over 45,000 people, eleven golf courses, seven shopping centers and seven recreation centers. Each center has its own Olympic-size swimming pool. You can also enjoy bowling, billiards, tennis, handball, racquetball, shuffleboard, boccie, miniature golf, a fitness gym, slowpitch softball and horseshoes. In addition, there is the Sundial Auditorium where round, square and ballroom dancing takes place every week, along with bingo and other weekly activities. There are arts & crafts rooms for ceramics, stained glass, sivercraft, photography, sewing, woodworking, painting and weaving as well as two libraries and a picnic area. There are also many recreational, social and craft clubs that relate to a particular hobby, vocation or special field of interest. The city is a self-contained community with abundant opportunity and facilities for continued education, volunteer work, enjoyment of crafts, sports, exercise, hobbies and recreation of all sorts. This creates interested, active and involved citizens. Sun City has more than 350 civic, service, church, charitable and cultural groups. Known as the "City of Volunteers," residents are active in Habitat for Humanity, assistant teaching in nearby communities, hospitals, "meals on wheels," and many additional volunteer activities.
